EXCELLENT SYSTEM-But BEWARE!
This system is a great Bang for your buck PC that probably provides the best performance for a prebuilt i7 Quad Core & High Performance Video card you can get on the market as of March 2010. The system will chew up anything you throw at it without a hitch. Thanks in part to the excellent Radeon 5850 video card which excels at all of the latest Direct X 11 and prior games.
The system also is extremely quiet while running. It boots up, shuts down, and resumes from Sleep Mode quickly.
So what’s wrong with the system…you ask? I particularly dont being lied to in false advertising! Gateway AND Intel advertise that the i7 Quad Core chip will run at a clock speed of 2.80 BUT uses a new Smart Hyper Boost Technology that will basically increase(overclock) the processors up to 3.43Ghz when needed to handled extra workloads. Wonderful…right?
Except it DOES NOT WORK in the Gateway FX6831 system!
They have it locked down (probably in the BIOS) which prevents it performing as advertised. So the highest clock speed you will ever get is 2.9Ghz!!
Yet Gateway doesnt inform you of this anywhere in the documentation or anywhere else!…And when I called Gateway’s tech support (oversees employee) tells me that this is an advanced tech support question that requires a credit card charge!! LOL! I kid you not.
Listen, here’s the deal. If your an everyday Joe Schmoe user, or even an everyday gamer that doesnt mind having your CPU speed somewhat crippled, its a great SYSTEM for the price….One of the best, actually. But if your like me, a power user who likes to get as much power and tweakability out of their systems, as well as actually get exactly what was advertised, then this system might warrant a WAIT and SEE approach. What I mean by wait and see is, let’s see if Gateway corrects this problem with a simple BIOS upgrade that unlocks the processors to …well, simply perform as they were designed, with no 3rd party limitations imposed!

Hugely under rated, High-end Gaming PC
I didn’t buy mine from Amazon as there are ways to save about 160 dollars elsewhere, however I did have to come here and spread the news that this PC is excellent! For the price and specs you hardly can complain. It booted up fine with no problems. Its fast and very quiet, even when gaming and overclocking. In fact its so quiet that you may not even realize its on if your monitor is turned off. Seriously my external Western Digital MyBook makes more noise than the PC! — The DVD-ROM drive is loud however especially when ripping CDs.
Heres are some facts
The Mainboard is branded as Gateway H57M01, I can’t find any info on it though. But you’ll have 1 x4 PCI-E and 1 X1 PCI-E slot availible. The pictures at Newegg are misleading. The CPU multiplier is not accessible.
The Ram used is branded Samsung.
There are 6 red lights that glow around the case. And you do have the option to turn them off by turning the power button instead of pressing it.
The included ATI HD5850 can be overclocked from 725mhz to 950mhz, and the voltage can also be adjusted.(using third party software, the ATI Catalyst only lets you go to 775mhz)
Does not come with speakers as seen in most pictures. But does include USB Keyboard and Mouse.
The cord for the keyboard was too short to reach the PC below my desk. I had to use a USB extension cable. The mouse cord is longer and reached just fine.
There are no software or backup discs included, everything is loaded on the hard drive, includeing a 17GB restore partition
And just a small nitpick, they could have included a mouse pad.
Excellent PC
This one replaces my 6 year old Dell. As others have said, this computer is very quiet. That’s a big plus.
I also like the way it is designed. The front USB, photo card slots and headphone/mic jacks are on top and slanted up. This makes for easy access.
I was worried because I at first thought it didn’t support XD photo cards because Amazon doesn’t mention it, but it does.
Performance, speed wise, is top notch.
You won’t be disappointed with this machine.
